Interdisciplinary and Intersectoral Research Fellowship Program for Future Leaders in Immunology

Objective

Interdisciplinary and Intersectoral Research Fellowship Program for Future Leaders in Immunology (IMMUFELLOW) is an innovative postdoctoral training initiative of the University of Turku (UTU) and Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) in Turku, Finland. Immune-related diseases, such as infections, atherosclerosis, and cancer, are increasing in prevalence and pose major societal/economic challenges. IMMUFELLOW will cultivate experts and leaders in immunology who will drive research advancements to address unmet needs in preventing and treating immune-mediated diseases. IMMUFELLOW will build on UTU’s/ÅAU’s excellence in leadership development, advanced education models, and beyond state-of-the-art immunological research ecosystem and infrastructure. With 22 experienced postdoctoral researchers (ERs) recruited for 36-month terms via a rigorous, merit-based selection process, this initiative prioritizes interdisciplinary and intersectoral research, aligning with the European Charter and Code. Supported by the InFLAMES Flagship, IMMUFELLOW fills a critical void in postdoctoral training, offering a structured program integrating science, technology and entrepreneurship. IMMUFELLOW ensures comprehensive research excellence and training opportunities beyond academia, with the following key features:
Support and Mentoring: Each ER benefits from a dedicated intersectoral mentoring team, access to exceptional training opportunities, and monthly seminars/networking events.
Sector-Wide Involvement: Beyond academia, fellows explore research, training, and development opportunities in corporate settings, with education on regulatory standards/good practices in diagnostics, drug development, and manufacturing.
Entrepreneurial Skills: Equipping fellows with the skills and knowledge to thrive in diverse professional environments.
IMMUFELLOW thus stands at the forefront of postdoctoral training, fostering the next generation of leaders in immunology and driving impactful research advancements.
