Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

Stroke and other conditions caused by blood clots remain a major global health challenge. Acute ischemic stroke alone affects millions of people each year and is a leading cause of death and long-term disability worldwide. Rapid removal of the clot that blocks blood flow to the brain is critical to restoring circulation and improving patient outcomes. While current minimally invasive treatments have significantly improved care, existing technologies still face important limitations. These include difficulties reaching smaller blood vessels, incomplete clot removal, and the risk that clots may fragment during extraction and travel further downstream, potentially causing additional damage.

The project supported by the European Innovation Council (EIC) aims to address these challenges through the development of a novel medical device designed to improve the removal of blood clots from blood vessels. The technology is based on a proprietary approach that uses controlled electric fields to create an attractive force between the device and the clot. When activated, the device interacts with the clot at the molecular level, enabling it to securely attach to the clot along its length and remove it more effectively. This mechanism is designed to reduce mechanical stress on the vessel walls and decrease the likelihood of clot fragmentation during removal.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

During the reporting period, the project focused on advancing the development of the innovative catheter-based technology for improved removal of blood clots from blood vessels. The main activities included engineering optimization of the device, preparation for clinical evaluation, and the initiation of verification and validation processes required for regulatory submission.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

The project is developing a new approach to removing blood clots that aims to overcome key limitations of existing mechanical thrombectomy technologies. Current treatments typically rely on mechanical devices that capture or aspirate the clot by applying radial force or suction. While effective in many cases, these approaches can sometimes lead to incomplete clot removal, fragmentation of the clot, or difficulty reaching smaller and more delicate blood vessels.

The technology developed in this project introduces a different mechanism for clot removal. Instead of relying primarily on mechanical gripping or suction, the device uses controlled electric fields to create an attractive interaction between the catheter and the clot. This interaction occurs along the length of the clot and enables the device to attach to it more uniformly. By distributing the attachment force across the clot rather than concentrating it at a single point, the technology aims to reduce the risk of clot fragmentation and improve the chances of removing the clot in a single attempt.

This concept represents a significant step beyond current thrombectomy approaches because it combines minimally invasive catheter technology with a novel physical mechanism for clot capture. The design is intended to minimize contact with the vessel wall while maintaining a strong and controlled interaction with the clot. If validated clinically, this approach could allow physicians to treat clots located in smaller or more fragile vessels that are difficult to access with existing devices.

The results achieved so far demonstrate the technical feasibility of this concept. Engineering optimization has led to a miniaturized catheter design suitable for navigating complex vascular anatomy, while laboratory and animal testing has confirmed that the device can generate strong attachment forces with different types of clots. These results support the potential of the technology to provide a more controlled and reliable method of clot retrieval.

Looking forward, further clinical evaluation will be required to confirm the safety and effectiveness of the technology in patients. Successful demonstration in clinical studies would enable the technology to progress toward regulatory approval and eventual integration into clinical practice.

The potential impact of this innovation is significant. By improving the effectiveness and reliability of clot removal procedures, the technology could help physicians restore blood flow more quickly and reduce complications associated with incomplete clot retrieval or distal embolization. This may translate into improved recovery outcomes for patients suffering from stroke and other clot-related conditions.
