Objective
XFuel is an innovative SME with R&D headquarters in Mallorca, Spain, with the mission to decarbonise the transport sector NOW.
The transport sector is responsible for a quarter of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, rising to 30% by 2050, and needs to tackle decarbonisation with great urgency. While electrification is a critical step towards a more sustainable future, this approach is not feasible for all vehicles and segments, and much of the transportation sector will remain liquid fuel-dependent. In particular for the marine and aviation transportation segments, with a fuel market size of $380Bn, growing to $900Bn by 2030, will need to rely on sustainable fuels to meet the 2030 decarbonization targets.
XFuel has developed proprietary breakthrough conversion technologies to produce high-grade transportation fuels with certified GHG saving (>80%) from fossil waste hydrocarbons or biomass. XFuel’s fuels are drop-in: compatible with fossil fuel specifications, combustion engines and infrastructure, allowing for direct replacement. The technology's feedstock flexibility allows large volumes of sustainable fuels to be produced. The cost effectiveness of the revolutionary low-energy conversion process makes it possible for the first time to sell low carbon fuels at fossil fuel market price, in this way disrupting the sustainable fuels market and addressing the enormous market opportunity of the global transportation fuels market.
XFuel's commercial strategy is based on decentralised fuel production, building scalable biorefineries directly at the location of consolidated feedstock. XFuel will enter into joint ventures with feedstock providers and will close the value chain by closing sales agreements with off-takers. With fuel sales starting in 2027, XFuel is achieving a return on investment (ROI) 4 years after the start of the EIC accelerator project.
