EUropean DIgital Twin Ocean phase 2

Project description

New tools to protect oceans and waters

EDITO is the public infrastructure of the European Digital Twin Ocean. The platform currently offers a growing array of tools to develop digital twins, support science-based decision-making and ensure maximum impact for research and innovation actions across the key objectives of the EU Mission Ocean and Waters: protect biodiversity, stop marine pollution and support a sustainable blue economy. Building on prior efforts (2022–2025), now in its second phase (2025-2028), the EU-funded EDITO 2 project aims to scale up the platform’s infrastructure and grow the community towards further advancing the co-creation of the European Digital Twin Ocean to make ocean information openly available to all. Diverse users stand to benefit from EDITO, including researchers, policymakers, innovators, entrepreneurs and citizens.

Objective

"EDITO (European Digital Twin Ocean) enters Phase 2 with a bold vision to scale up its capabilities, broaden its user base, and establish itself as the cornerstone for co-creating the European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO). Central to the EU Mission ""Restore our Ocean and Waters,"" EDITO aims to empower decision-makers, researchers, and communities with cutting-edge tools and actionable knowledge, fostering collaboration across public, private, and civil society sectors.
In Phase 1, EDITO validated its potential by integrating diverse data, models, and tools, collaborating with leading marine initiatives such as EMODnet and Copernicus Marine Service. Building on this foundation, Phase 2 will expand the platform’s reach, ensuring accessibility for non-experts while enhancing its services for researchers and institutional contributors.
The service model comprises three tiers, explore, create and contribute for addressing the needs of
non-expert users, researchers, institutions and businesses.
Key initiatives include scaling the cloud-native infrastructure, integrating high-resolution data into a unified Core Catalogue, and implementing robust validation for third-party contributions. Phase 2 will also drive community engagement through Horizon Europe collaborations, open calls, and outreach activities like hackathons and innovation challenges.

EDITO aligns with global initiatives, including the UN DITTO Program and Destination Earth, ensuring interoperability and adherence to international standards. It supports the development of tailored ""local twins"" in Lighthouse Areas, addressing regional ecosystem and climate needs.

By 2030, EDITO envisions a fully operational DTO platform, serving as a global benchmark for digital ocean solutions. With a user-centric approach and commitment to co-creation, Phase 2 is a pivotal step toward transforming fragmented marine data into actionable, accessible knowledge for all."

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

HORIZON-IA - HORIZON Innovation Actions
