Gravitational Lensing of Waves

Objective

Gravitational lensing provides invaluable insight into astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. Now, a new frontier is open thanks to observational breakthroughs in gravitational waves (GWs) and fast radio bursts (FRBs). Like visible light, these signals are deflected and magnified by gravitational fields, but their phase coherence exposes wave-optics lensing phenomena: wavefront distortions that can help us identify very distant sources and characterize the intervening matter distribution. Planned facilities have the capacity to detect lensed GWs and FRBs in this decade, but an advanced framework is needed to identify and interpret these novel signals.

GLOW will leverage the unique properties of coherent sources to discover lensed signals and spearhead progress in astrophysics and fundamental physics. Over the last 4 years, the PI’s group has pioneered the study of wave-optics lensing and developed an advanced code to study its signatures. Building on this expertise, GLOW will formulate the theory needed to describe realistic matter distributions and robustly search for lensed GWs in LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA data. GLOW will unravel high-redshift sources, assess galactic nuclei as the origin of GWs, and empower FRBs to identify extragalactic planet-scale lenses. GLOW will drastically improve constraints on dark-matter objects and prepare LISA to scrutinize the cold dark matter paradigm. It will deliver novel tests of General Relativity and dark-energy theories, far more powerful than a mere confirmation of GW lensing. In addition its potential to timely spark transformative science, GLOW will allow us to prepare for upcoming facilities by hearing GWs and seeing FRBs beyond our current horizons. These advances will establish coherent gravitationally lensed sources as an engine for discovery.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
