Project description
Understanding lithospheric dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean-Anatolian region
The Eastern Mediterranean-Anatolian region is a tectonic zone shaped by the interactions of the African, Arabian, and Eurasian plates. It involves subduction, continental collision, and backarc extension. In this context, the EU-funded DEFMOD-LiMA project will study lithospheric deformation through an approach that combines geophysical and geodynamic methods. It will generate high-resolution 3D models of shear-wave velocity in the crust and mantle, mapping variations in crustal and lithospheric thickness. These models will integrate geological, geophysical, and geodetic data to simulate current lithospheric dynamics and their interaction with the asthenosphere. The project aims to improve seismic risk assessments and advance understanding of continental collisions in other complex regions worldwide, such as the Himalayas and the Appalachians.
Objective
The Eastern Mediterranean-Anatolian region presents a complex tectonic environment characterized by the interaction of the African, Arabian, and Eurasian plates. This area exhibits a unique interplay of subduction, continental collision, and backarc extension. The DEFMOD-LiMA project (Deformation Modelling of the Lithosphere in the Eastern Mediterranean-Anatolian Region) aims to elucidate mechanisms of lithospheric deformations in this intricate setting through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates geophysical and geodynamic methods. The project involves mapping high-resolution 3D isotropic, radially- and azimuthally anisotropic shear-wave velocity models of the crust and mantle, including detailed mapping of crustal and lithospheric thickness variations. The resulting models will be integrated with geological, geophysical, and geodetic observations to construct comprehensive 3D geodynamic models simulating the present-day lithospheric dynamics and their interplay with the underlying asthenosphere. This research is critical for quantifying lithospheric deformation and associated seismic hazards observed across the area and its active margins. DEFMOD-LiMA will contribute to improving seismic risk assessment in the area but also refining our knowledge of continental collisions in other regions of complex geodynamic evolution globally (e.g. Himalaya, the Appalachians in eastern North America, Tonga Fiji region in southwest Pacific Ocean). Accurate seismic risk assessment leads to well-defined strategies for earthquake risk reduction and emergency preparedness, supporting societies in developing and implementing sustainable development plans.
