Project description
Women shaping early 20th-century politics
Between 1900 and 1914, women played an important, yet often overlooked, role in shaping republican and democratic thought through journalism. Across Portugal, Mexico, and Spain, their voices helped drive transatlantic debates on political reform, challenging the male-dominated narratives of the time. In this context, the EU-funded WoPressRep project will shed light on this female contribution by examining journalistic activity from a plurinational perspective. Moving beyond national borders, the project reveals how women not only circulated progressive ideas but also actively engaged in the broader democratic movements of their time. This fresh approach sheds light on their vital influence in shaping early 20th-century political thought across three nations.
Objective
The general objective of this research project is to recover and analyze, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the female contribution to the debates and transmission of republican and democratic principles, values, and projects between 1900 and 1914 through their journalistic activity, adopting a plurinational geographical approach that includes three Atlantic countries: Portugal, Mexico, and Spain. The adoption of this Atlantic approach not only allows for the appreciation of the possible circulation of ideas and the mobility of some of their spokespersons within these territories but also overcomes the limitations sometimes imposed by national frameworks and provides insight into how women participated in the broader debate on republicanism and democracy taking place at the time.
