Objective
"The transition from glycolytic to oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) metabolism is crucial for proper neuronal differentiation and maturation, a key process in generating functional neurons essential for advancing neuroscience research and therapeutic applications. However, commercially available media to generate neurons often overlook this key metabolic transition. MetaBoost aims to fill this gap by developing an innovative, easy-to-use, universally compatible media supplement that induces metabolic reprogramming in Drosophila or human neural cells, enhancing differentiation and maturation efficiently and reproducibly.
Building on the success of MetaBoost2Fly, developed during the ERC Starting Grant StemCellHabitat to address unmet needs in fly model-based neuroscience research, this Proof of Concept (PoC) aims to:
1. Validate MetaBoost2Fly for Drosophila cells, advancing from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3 to 4, refining its formulation, assessing reproducibility, and exploring commercial potential for the Drosophila research community.
2. Establish MetaBoost2Human (targeting TRL3), a media supplement designed to shift metabolism from glycolysis to OxPhos in human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and neural stem cells (NSCs), enhancing neuronal differentiation and maturation.
MetaBoost has the potential to transform the cell culture market, addressing the needs of academia, pharma, and biotech in neuroscience research, drug discovery, and preclinical development. Additionally, MetaBoost supports the shift to human cell models over animal studies, aligning with the 3Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement), promoting more ethical, relevant research. Finally, MetaBoost2Fly and MetaBoost2Human are positioned as commercially viable ""Research Grade"" products, offering rapid market entry and strong potential to accelerate neuroscience innovation

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
