Project description
New platform to accelerate cancer therapies
Solid tumours frequently develop resistance to therapies, which can lead to treatment failures. This resistance results from the intricate interplay between heterogeneous cancer cell populations and their microenvironment, contributing to tumour evolution and local adaptation. Current drug discovery processes often fail to address this complexity adequately. The ERC-funded EVOaware project will develop an innovative platform that integrates genome editing, spatial barcoding, high-throughput drug screening, multimodal spatial omics, and spatial pattern analysis. This comprehensive approach aims to address the critical issue of therapeutic resistance in cancer from an evolutionary perspective. Ultimately, the project aspires to accelerate the discovery and development of novel cancer therapies, enhancing patient outcomes and contributing to the advancement of cancer treatment.
Objective
Solid tumours frequently develop resistance to therapies, leading to treatment failure. This resistance arises from the complex interplay between heterogeneous cancer cell populations and their microenvironment, driving tumour evolution and local adaptation. Current drug discovery pipelines fall short in addressing this complexity. In this ERC-PoC, we will develop EVOaware, a groundbreaking platform that integrates genome editing, spatial barcoding, high-throughput drug screening, multimodal spatial omics, and spatial pattern analysis, to address the critical challenge of therapeutic resistance in cancer from the lens of evolution. Ultimately, EVOaware will accelerate the discovery and development of novel cancer therapies, leading to improved patient outcomes.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
