Project description
Low-cost Centrifugal Perfusion Gut-on-Chip alternative for drug absorption studies
The Centrifugal Perfusion Gut-on-Chip (CPGoC) system uses centrifugal force for continuous perfusion, mimicking fluid flow and nutrient transport in the human intestine. This eliminates the need for external pumps and tubing, reducing costs and contamination risks. In this context, the ERC-funded Celloop-CPGoC project aims to validate the CPGoC system, a low-cost, pump-free, and user-friendly alternative for drug absorption studies. This system addresses the limitations of outdated static cultures and the high costs of microfluidic organ chips. By providing an affordable and relevant model, CPGoC could accelerate drug discovery, reduce development costs, and streamline regulatory approval processes, thereby revolutionising drug testing.
Objective
This project aims to validate the Centrifugal Perfusion Gut-on-Chip (CPGoC) system, offering a low-cost, pump-free, and user-friendly alternative to existing microfluidic systems for drug absorption studies. Unlike traditional models, CPGoC uses centrifugal force to drive continuous perfusion, closely mimicking physiological fluid flow and nutrient transport in the human intestine. Thus, it eliminates the need for external pumps and tubing, reducing costs, contamination risks, and technical barriers.
Our system is designed to bridge the gap between outdated static cultures and overpriced, complex microfluidic organ chips. By offering an affordable, easy-to-use, and physiologically relevant alternative, CPGoC will accelerate drug discovery, reduce development costs, and shorten development time. CPGoC has the potential to revolutionize drug testing, providing researchers with a more accessible and predictive model to improve human drug evaluation and regulatory approval processes.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
