Objective
Epidemiology, biostatistics, and mathematical modeling are essential for generating, processing, and translating evidence for public health policies.
This proposal outlines a training program based at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI)-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) in Kilifi, in collaboration with Epicenter in Niger, Manhiça Research Center in Mozambique, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in the UK. KWTRP maintains strong partnerships with these institutions through initiatives like the Initiative to Develop African Research Leaders (IDeAL).
Over three years, the project will provide training in infectious disease modeling through the following activities:
1. Short courses in modeling
Five two-week courses will be held for researchers in Sub-Saharan Africa, covering foundational epidemiology, statistical modeling, and mathematical modeling. Two of these courses will be in English, two in French, and one in Portuguese.
2. Short courses for policymakers
Three one-week short courses will introduce policymakers and public health professionals to the fundamentals of mathematical modeling. These sessions will emphasize practical applications, enabling participants to interpret modeling results for policy decisions.
3. Modelling fellow placements
Ten fellows will undertake collaborative 9-month modeling projects supervised by experts at KWTRP and partner institutions, with co-supervision from epidemiologists and scientists in relevant research settings. This initiative aims to build long-term capacity in modeling, fostering a new generation of researchers and policymakers.
4. Seminars/Webinars on modeling for policy
Quarterly seminars and webinars will highlight real-world applications of modeling in public health, featuring case studies on major health challenges.
This program will strengthen modeling expertise, enhance research capacity, and support evidence-based policy-making in Africa.
