Objective
The Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) proposes the establishment of CECROP, the first European Centre of Excellence dedicated to sustainable and smart crop protection, addressing a critical gap in the European Research Area. CECROP will transform Greece’s fragmented crop-protection landscape into an integrated, internationally competitive ecosystem for research, innovation and policy support. CECROP is built on a strategic partnership between AUA, Wageningen University (WU) and the University of Turin (UNITO), two globally leading institutions in crop protection, digital agriculture and precision application technologies. Through long-term scientific collaboration, joint laboratories and harmonised methodologies, the partners will deliver research and innovation excellence by integrating plant pathology, weed science, agricultural and productive entomology, artificial intelligence and smart spraying within a coherent Integrated Pest Management (IPM) framework. The Centre is reinforced by six key Greek partners (SAH, GSC, QUALCO, G&D, ESYF and ETHEAS) covering digital innovation, AI, policy, industry, advisory services and farmer organisations. This consortium ensures strong research–industry–practice–policy integration, enabling the co-development, validation and uptake of innovative crop-protection solutions under real farming conditions. Through institutional reform, governance autonomy, upgraded infrastructure, advanced capacity building and a Living Lab–driven innovation model, CECROP will elevate the national ecosystem to European excellence level, strengthen participation and leadership in EU programmes, and translate scientific advances into operational, market- and policy-ready outcomes. Aligned with the Green Deal, CAP, Farm to Fork, Smart Specialisation Strategy and the Sustainable Use of Pesticides framework, CECROP will operate as a permanent Centre of Excellence and a regional lighthouse for South-East Europe and the Mediterranean.
