Objective
The Extended Reality Technologies Research and Training in Healthcare (APOLLO CoE) envisages establishing an interdisciplinary hub for research, innovation, and education, positioning itself as a leading international Centre of Excellence in immersive healthcare technologies. It aims to deliver hyper-realistic, AI-driven, patient-specific simulations and validated, competence-based immersive education programmes with measurable clinical outcomes, while fostering entrepreneurship through spin-offs, IP management, and strong industry collaboration. Its main goal is to establish a state-of-the-art CoE that will boost Greek R&I excellence and become a world leader in AI, metaverse technologies, and immersive technology-based healthcare training. To achieve this, the CoE is structured around five Strategic Pillars (SPs): (i) Core Research Areas (XR, AI, GenAI, Digital Twins), (ii) Education and Training, (iii) Critical Enabling Infrastructure, (iv) Innovation and Business Development, and (v) Project and Operational Support. The CoE unites top Greek institutions (NKUA, FORTH, NTUA) with leading Advanced Partners (CAMES, CSCM, UNINOVA), forming a consortium that combines world-class research, education, and innovation capacity. APOLLO CoE has secured a €15 million national funding commitment from the Greek Ministry of Health (Prot. Num. ΟΙΚ208-16/1/2026) to provide complementary financing for the Horizon Europe Teaming initiative. The APOLLO CoE aims to train over 5,000 healthcare professionals and students and develop more than 20 next-generation XR training modules, contributing to measurable improvements in patient safety, workforce readiness, and healthcare system efficiency. In parallel, it will launch new spin-offs, strengthen Greece’s innovation ecosystem, and stimulate regional economic activity. It will foster evidence-based clinical excellence, address critical healthcare skills gaps, and accelerate the adoption of next-generation digital healthcare solutions.
