Agri-food Supply ChAin Leadership for Excellence & Sustainability

Objective

The SCALES Centre aims to establish Greece’s first interdisciplinary hub for sustainable agri-food supply chains at the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA), in partnership with University College Dublin (UCD), Wageningen University & Research (WUR), and VILABS. Its main objective is to transform Greece from a widening country into a Mediterranean innovation leader by addressing fragmented research domains through systems-level integration.
The Centre’s methodology is built on 3 pillars:
Research Excellence: SCALES will tackle critical agri-food challenges through 4 methodological pillars: a) a multi-dimensional supply chain assessment system to integrate performance and sustainability metrics; b) a farm-to-fork digital platform for traceability, transparency, and resource optimisation; c) a circular value creation methodology to transform linear supply chains into circular systems; and d) a social value assessment framework to evaluate equity, well-being, and resilience across supply chains.
Infrastructure Development: State-of-the-art infrastructure will include digital twin systems, real-time monitoring systems, sustainability assessment tools, and VR/AR co-creation facilities. The phased development will prioritise equipment enabling immediate research outputs.
Human Capital Development: SCALES will offer 15 PhD positions, 10 postdoctoral fellowships, and structured training for AUA staff. -Initiatives include cross-institutional supervision, mobility programs, and industry immersion opportunities to build capacity and foster innovation.
SCALES addresses UN SDGs 2, 9, 12, and 17. It is aligned with Horizon Europe’s objectives and contributes to the European Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy.
SCALES is designed to integrate and advance various priority areas outlined in Greece’s Smart Specialisation Strategy for 2021-2027. It connects the domains of Agro-food value chain, Transport and Logistics, Digital Technologies, and Environment and Circular Economy.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
