Objective
"The Agrifood Climate Resilience Excellence Centre (ACRE) is a proposed Centre of Excellence aimed at transforming Democritus University of Thrace’s (DUTH) Agroecology and Digital Agriculture (ADA) institute into a global leader in climate-resilient agrifood solutions. ACRE will harness digital technologies and interdisciplinary research to address pressing agricultural challenges. Its objectives are to (i) establish a world-class CoE through the modernization of ADA into a nexus for innovative, climate-resilient agricultural practices with high societal impact; (ii) recruit top talent by attracting researchers and business experts to bolster expertise in digital and sustainable agriculture; (iii) foster collaborations through strategic partnerships with academia, industry, and public sectors to drive innovation and secure funding; (iv) ensure sustainability through diverse funding and promote market-driven research for long-term viability; (v) create lasting impact by influencing Greece’s R&I culture, promote sustainable farming, and establish a unified Farm Advisory System. These goals will be met by scaling DUTH’s existing achievements, such as the #DigiAgrifood EDIH, and leveraging international partnerships with Wageningen Research (WR) and Reframe.food (RFF). ACRE will engage with stakeholders through training, workshops, and Living Labs to co-create and disseminate solutions. Research will span precision agriculture, biotechnology, and agroecology, translating findings into practical applications. ACRE aligns with the work programme’s aims of enhancing access to excellence, fostering brain circulation, mobilizing investments, and building innovative ecosystems. By supporting the European Research Area (ERA) principles, the EU Green Deal, and Digital Transformation strategies, ACRE will bridge the R&I gap in Greece, delivering socioeconomic benefits and sustainable agrifood advancements."
