Sustainable Artificial Intelligence Laboratory

Objective

The Sustainable Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL) will contribute to establish INESC ID as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) dedicated to the development of state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) systems with real-world impact, creating economic value and driving sustainable innovation through pioneering translational research. SAIL will establish a comprehensive research-to-innovation pipeline, spanning from fundamental AI research to its economic and societal deployment. To this end, the coordinating institution, INESC-ID, will team up with two leading European institutions that complement each other adifferent stages of the innovation cycle: MPI-SWS for groundbreaking research and DFKI for advanced solutions to concrete problems faced by people and organizations. SAIL’s mission is structured into four specific objectives: develop advanced research; train a new generation of professionals; foster innovation and societal impact through the deployment of AI technology; and contribute to an appropriate ethical and legal framework for the use of AI. To achieve these goals, SAIL will promote a holistic methodology and approach, encompassing: research excellence through a combination of international collaborations along with measures for talent creation, attraction and retention; initiatives that promote the permeability between research and companies towards the deployment of AI in the economy and society; a world-class AI research and innovation environment with strong internal capabilities and infrastructure; and actions to promote the ethical, safe, and sustainable use of AI. Furthermore, SAIL’s activities will be guided by the principles of open science, broad outreach, and an inclusive governance promoting transparency, sustainability, and equal opportunities. Through these actions, SAIL will be well positioned to generate scientific, economic and societal transformations that are fully aligned with the target outcomes and impacts of the work programme.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
