Teaming to Drive the Future of Genomic Medicine

Objective

Genomic medicine is transforming healthcare through precise, personalized solutions that enhance patient outcomes. However, Portugal faces significant challenges, including limited genomic sequencing, fragmented clinical applications, and a shortage of specialized talent. i3S-HEALTH aims to address these issues by modernizing the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S) into a global Centre of Excellence in Genomic Medicine under the guidance of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) as an advanced partner. i3S-HEALTH will establish a state-of-the-art Genomic Medicine Hub that uniquely integrates next-generation sequencing, computational biology, AI-driven bioinformatics, and high-throughput functional genomics for new variants discovery to improve patient care. This initiative will be Portugal's first multidisciplinary platform connecting advanced genomic research with clinical diagnostics. Key expected outcomes will include expanded diagnostic capacity and accuracy, trained specialists, developing novel predictive algorithms for complex genetic conditions, and identifying actionable multi-omics biomarkers. i3S-HEALTH will enrich the genomic medicine landscape in Portugal and Europe by strategically engaging the scientific community to accelerate genomic discoveries and foster high-impact collaborations with healthcare providers, improving clinical decision-making through better diagnostics and personalized patient care. It will also collaborate with industry to co-develop innovative diagnostics and therapeutics in public-private partnerships. Increased revenues from advanced diagnostic services, strategic industry partnerships, new projects, IP development, and the launch of genomics spin-offs will ensure sustainability beyond the project. i3S-HEALTH will directly strengthen national R&I performance in genomic medicine, positioning i3S as a leading European center for innovation and excellence in genomic healthcare research.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
