Competence Center for Theranostics and Radiopharmaceutical Excellence in the Baltic Region

Objective

THERA-BALT: Establishing a Competence Center for Theranostics and Radiopharmaceutical Excellence in the Baltic Region

THERA-BALT aims to establish a world-class Competence Center for Theranostics and Radiopharmacy in Lithuania, hosted by the National Cancer Institute. The project addresses disparities in R&I performance by strengthening national capabilities in targeted cancer diagnostics and treatment using radioactive pharmaceuticals. It will modernize existing infrastructure, develop a full research-to-clinic pipeline, and attract international talent through strategic partnerships with leading institutions in Norway and Taiwan.

The center will focus on five core areas: advanced radionuclide production and dosimetry, identification of novel molecular targets via proteomics, development of innovative radiopharmaceuticals, preclinical and clinical validation, and the integration of multimodal imaging techniques. A strong emphasis will be placed on commercialization, IP protection, and the uptake of technologies by industry and healthcare providers.

By combining scientific excellence, international collaboration, and sustainable national co-funding (through national and ESIF programs), THERA-BALT will significantly enhance Lithuania’s position in the European Research Area. Expected outcomes include improved research intensity, new cancer treatment options, economic growth through innovation, and long-term institutional transformation in line with Horizon Europe’s Widening objectives.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
