Center of Excellence for renewable, smart, resilient and self-sufficient energy systems in Outermost territories and non-interconnected areas

Objective

Reunion Island and its 900,000 inhabitants represent the EU in a nutshell: urban, peri-urban and rural; mountainous and coastal; rich of 100 microclimates; multicultural. As featured in its Smart Specialization Strategy, addressing its energy challenges is vital for the territory and a chance to become a strategic EU R&I laboratory. The project Reunion Energies Excellence Center - RE²C ambitions to create in La Reunion a worldwide recognized Center of Excellence for renewable, smart, resilient and self-sufficient energy systems, with specific interest in Outermost Territories and non-interconnected areas. RE²C is a catalyst for regional R&I capacity to bring solutions to reach a renewable and self-sufficient energy system at multiple scales, considering the tropical and insular environments’ specificities. It embeds a long-term vision of world-class and sustainable R&I, thanks to a powerful Teaming alliance between the Reunion key actors at academic (University of La Reunion), business (Temergie) and institutional (Region Reunion and Energies Reunion) levels, and top-tier EU institutions with proven excellence in energy R&I: Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Energy Institute of the Johannes Kepler University (EIJKU), Technology Institute of Aragon (ITA), federation of FR offshore test sites (OPEN-C). They will implement an ambitious capacity-building roadmap combining structural transfer of excellence and best practices, joint R&I activities and infrastructure, talent recruitment, new education and training, international Summit and events, building capacities in technical and cross-sectoral energy sector, innovation support and international integration. RE²C represents a bold step for steering clean energy innovation and closing the innovation gap of La Reunion, an Outermost Region, with the rest of the EU, leveraging its unique context and replicability potential to make it a pioneer and perfect playground for shaping the future of energy self-sufficiency.
