NOVA INSTITUTE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Objective

The NOVA_i4SF will establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Human and Environmental Health for a Sustainable Future at NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA), in strategic partnership with Leiden University (LU) and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). The CoE aims to transform the pharmaceutical industry by pioneering eco-friendly active pharmaceutical ingredients and sustainable processes, thereby significantly reducing environmental impact.
Pharmaceutical pollution is a serious threat to ecosystems and human health, accentuated by pharmaceutical industry emissions and residues. By leveraging advanced research in green solvents, molecular biology, integrative omics, and AI-based tools, with Leiden’s expertise, NOVA_i4SF will address challenges in sustainable (bio)pharmaceuticals. The CoE’s objectives include creating an autonomous research hub, ensuring long-term sustainability through robust funding, building a world-class team, delivering cutting-edge research, and offering specialized training. The project also emphasizes transdisciplinary approaches, forging strong ties with industry, and securing alignment with EU missions. Through Sparkling Research Projects, the CoE will accelerate the discovery of sustainable therapies and pioneer environmentally conscious drug development. A governance structure with dedicated boards will guide NOVA_i4SF’s scientific agenda, with strategic investments fueling new facilities, advanced analytical equipment, and synergy with existing consortia. Empowering NOVA's R&D facilities and Leiden’s global networks, the CoE will drive new research strands and foster industry collaborations, addressing the lack of a centralised hub for sustainable pharmaceutical processes in EU. NOVA_i4SF aspires to serve as a global leader in the design, production, and dissemination of greener, safer pharmaceutical solutions, driving innovation and competitive growth while benefiting society, the environment, and the EU Research Area.
