RePowering North-East Scotland's Future

Objective

Aberdeen has been a leader in hydrogen energy in the UK for over a decade, and is established as one of the first-mover locations for
EU H2 activities.

The TH2ISTLE project, led by Aberdeen City Council, builds on this distinguished hydrogen heritage; it promises to help accelerate the
North-East Scotland’s energy transition by establishing the UK’s first Hydrogen Valley.
TH2ISTLE proposes an innovative ‘demand-led’ approach, leveraging new and existing private and public sector funding, and
production from the proposed - and separately funded - Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub. Our aim is to stimulate hydrogen uptake across
focused sectors including mobility, agriculture, food and drink, and construction. To support adoption we plan to install infrastructure
at key nodes, across the region.

TH2ISTLE contains a programme of scaling studies to drive replication, including into continental Europe. The project is strategically
located to take advantage of over 17 GW of proposed Scotwind offshore wind capacity, and local talent pools and supply chains. It
presents opportunity to support implementing a just energy transition through reskilling oil and gas sector capability and growing
new strength in low carbon hydrogen and renewables. TH2ISTLE aims to drive innovation through supporting early-stage companies
and via research and key academic institutions.

With a focus on creating a replicable model, TH2ISTLE encompasses comprehensive strategies for scaling and replication across
Scotland, the UK, the EU and across the globe. It presents important opportunity to capture benefits of a more sustainable, low
carbon hydrogen future.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
