Objective
H2ROAM (Hydrogen for Robust Off-road Application Modules) aims to advance and demonstrate adaptable hydrogen-powered powertrain systems at TRL6, designed to meet diverse fuel cell power demands. The project focuses on two primary configurations: a baseline (110kW) and a multi-configuration (200kW), with varying levels of hybridization to address the operational needs of non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) in agricultural and port activities. Building upon insights from past EU-funded initiatives like H2Ports and H2Mac, H2ROAM emphasizes the promotion and field validation of hydrogen-powered electric NRMM, showcasing their configurability, reliability, environmental sustainability, and economic feasibility. Through rigorous field demonstrations, H2ROAM will evaluate modular powertrain building blocks in dynamic and extreme operational conditions, including exposure to extreme temperatures, high humidity and corrosive environments, heavy vibrations and shocks, dust and debris, water and moisture, high mechanical loads, and continuous high-demand operations. The project also incorporates a comprehensive lifecycle and techno-economic assessment to ensure cost-effectiveness and long-term viability. Collaboration with stakeholders, who have actively endorsed H2ROAM from its conceptual stage, ensures alignment with market trends, regulatory standards, and practical industry needs. These include critical inputs on refueling risk assessments, dust impact on hydrogen infrastructure, and strategies for long-term adoption of fuel cell technology in NRMM. By addressing both technical challenges and market adoption barriers, H2ROAM contributes to the integration of hydrogen technology into industrial ecosystems, accelerating the transition to zero-emission machinery and fostering a cleaner, more sustainable future.
