PROton Conductive Electrolysis with Enhanced Durability

Objective

The PROCEED project aims to accelerate the development and industrial adoption of Proton Conducting Ceramic Electrolyser (PCCEL) technology for efficient, high-purity green hydrogen production. As the EU targets 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen production by 2030, advanced electrolysis technologies like PCCEL are essential to diversify the technological landscape, reduce reliance on critical raw materials, and meet decarbonisation goals in hard-to-abate sectors.

PROCEED will design and validate a scalable, durable, and cost-effective PCCEL system based on innovative metal-supported cells, advanced coatings, and a compact, integrated balance-of-plant (BoP). The project will deliver two short stacks and a 20 kW industrial prototype, using both conventional and innovative manufacturing techniques to reduce complexity and improve performance. The first configuration will be designed to be compatible with Solydera's automated manufactruing line, promoting mass production and decreasing production costs. The second one is an advanced 3D-printed short stack, integrating meral supports and interconnects to enhance gas and temperature uniformity, reduce contact resistances, and simplify the stack architecture, simplifying the manufacturing process. A strong emphasis will be placed on identifying, studying and prevent degradation mechanisms, both at experimental and modelling level, extending systems operational lifetime. A fully integrated and optimized BoP will be designed and simulated using Aspen tools, incorporating heat management and dual steam feeds with the goal of maximizing system efficiency and enabling a scalable 20 kW electrolysis prototype.

The project integrates material innovation, advanced manufacturing, system-level optimization, and sustainability assessments to lower hydrogen production cost and environmental impact. Key outputs include two validated stack designs, TEA and LCA, and roadmaps for scale-up and market deployment.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
