Objective
The IMPHORIA project under Chips JU transforms the treatment of chronic diseases by creating closed-loop implantable neuromodulation systems.
These systems integrate advanced microelectronics, real-time sensing, adaptive stimulation, and embedded artificial intelligence into a universal platform for personalized therapies. Current neuromodulation devices are often bulky, rigid, and operate in open-loop mode, limiting their effectiveness. IMPHORIA overcomes these barriers by delivering a highly integrated ASIC platform for bidirectional neural interfacing, edge AI algorithms for adaptive control, and advanced packaging for long-term bio-integration.
IMPHORIA’s platform enables precise, adaptive neuromodulation tailored to individual patient needs, dynamically adjusting stimulation based on sensed biological signals. The project covers the full technology stack: from custom electronics and microfabrication to intelligent software and system-level integration. Clinical validation focuses on four major applications - migraine, spinal cord injury, hypertension, and Parkinson’s disease - demonstrating the platform’s versatility and therapeutic potential across diverse use cases.
Through close collaboration between leaders in medical device innovation, semiconductor technology, clinical research, and manufacturing, IMPHORIA bridges the gap between technological breakthroughs and real-world healthcare impact. The project strengthens European leadership in next-generation implantable medical systems, supporting the Chips JU mission of securing Europe's strategic autonomy in advanced electronics and smart health technologies. IMPHORIA delivers not only groundbreaking technology but also a robust pathway toward regulatory approval, manufacturability, and clinical adoption, enabling smarter, more accessible healthcare solutions for millions of patients across Europe and beyond.
