AGGREGATED INTELLIGENCE FOR FARMING AT THE EDGE

Objective

The AFarEdge project is designed to bridge the gap between the European ECS industry and farmers by optimizing the workflow for the evolution of agricultural components, leveraging European development expertise. The initiative addresses the pressing question of how to balance ambitious Green Deal objectives with European food security, particularly in the face of climate disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and dwindling farm profitability. To meet these challenges, AFarEdge leverages breakthrough semiconductor innovations, originally developed for automotive and industrial automation, which hold great potential for agriculture. These technologies can be cost-effectively customized to support European farms in fulfilling Green Deal requirements while maintaining viable livelihoods.

AFarEdge emphasizes the importance of AI-enhanced data processing along the Edge to Cloud Continuum, which offers the most promising outcomes in agricultural applications. By deploying local processing capabilities, AFarEdge addresses challenges like task allocation, security, and resource efficiency, all crucial for farmers. Additionally, AI-driven technologies enable privacy-conscious, distributed intelligence, such as federated learning, which enhances device accuracy while preserving data security.

The project also aims to address the technical challenges posed by agriculture's unique environment. Harsh conditions and limited connectivity require durable, energy-efficient solutions for edge data processing. Additionally, the lack of calibration data for new sensors can hinder their widespread adoption. AFarEdge addresses these obstacles by utilizing modern machine learning techniques, enabling adaptive modeling and decentralized processing that reduce reliance on costly, centralized testing.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
