Exploring fungal pathogens within unexplored microbial networks

Objective

Fellows4Fungi is a prestigious international postdoctoral programme addressing the urgent global health challenge of fungal infections. Hosted by the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (LEIBNIZ-HKI) in Jena, Germany, the programme will recruit 12 top-tier researchers through two calls, offering 36-month fellowships that combine research freedom with structured, interdisciplinary training.
LEIBNIZ-HKI is Germany’s only academic centre dedicated to human-pathogenic fungi and a global leader in antifungal research and natural product discovery. Fellows will carry out pioneering work across six strategic research areas, ranging from AI-driven drug discovery and fungal pathogenesis to microbiome modelling and epigenetics. The programme’s scientific mission directly addresses the World Health Organization’s (WHO) call to action on fungal pathogens such as Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans, which are rising in clinical relevance due to increasing antifungal resistance.
Fellows4Fungi offers access to cutting-edge infrastructure – including robotics platforms, high-performance computing, and a unique microbial strain collection -alongside secondments and mentoring with 18 leading academic, clinical, and biotech partners in 7 countries. The programme combines scientific excellence with a strong commitment to open science, equality, and responsible research, supporting fellows with competitive salaries, personalised career development, and an inclusive research environment. Fellows4Fungi will train the next generation of leaders to bridge innovation gaps and drive advances in antifungal therapy, diagnostics, and data-driven healthcare solutions.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
