UK AI Factory Antenna

Objective

The UK AI Factory Antenna (UKAIFA) proposal is designed to align directly with the European Commission's AI Factories Concept Paper published in 2024 and the subsequent launch of the AI Factory Antenna concept by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking in 2025.

Each AI Factory Antenna will work in full coordination with one of the established AI Factories. In the case of the UKAIFA, it will partner with the HammerHAI AI Factory which is based in Germany and led by HLRS at the University of Stuttgart. In parallel the UKAIFA will be fully aligned with the UK Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan and Compute Road Map. It will act as a bridge between AI activities and public investments in the UK and the similar activities within the European Union.

HLRS and EPCC have collaborated for over 20 years and are acknowledged across Europe as the leading sites for industry-focussed supercomputing. We will support the growing demand for AI adoption, focussing on start-ups, SMEs, larger industrial companies and the public sector (with a particular focus on AI for health). We will build on our experience of operating our regional data and AI facility – the £110m Edinburgh International Data Facility (EIDF). We will work across the UK, following an approach that focuses on the strengths of each region, to demonstrate how AI and data driven innovation can deliver economic growth across society, and how AI can be adopted by a wide range of organisations. The larger-scale HammerHAI AI Factory will complement the EIDF by providing access to AI resources at scale, and as a gateway to EuroHPC AI Factories in general.
