Operator Filtering in Electromagnetics: a New Computational Paradigm for Linear Predictions from up to the Quartic Complexity

Objective

"Computational Electromagnetics (CEM) is the scientific field that targets the simulation and modelling of electromagnetic engineering’s most challenging scenarios. The discipline currently struggles with high computational costs due to the increasing technological complexity and miniaturization in various applications, such as TeraHertz devices, nanoantennas, and neuroimaging technologies, resulting in an increasing number of numerical Degrees of Freedom to handle in simulations.

The TESSERHACK project aims to revolutionize this state of play by tackling one of CEM most significant Grand Challenges: reducing the computational complexity of CEM originated matrix-vector products, matrix inversions, and multi-right-hand-side (MRHS) problems from up to quartic to linear scaling in terms of Degrees of Freedom.

TESSERHACK will attain this by introducing a groundbreaking approach named ""Operator Filtering,"" which will eliminate irrelevant numerical eigenspaces in CEM matrices, enabling non-hierarchical low-rank structures. TESSERHACK will develop these filters for all operators relevant in electromagnetics, achieving fast algorithms applicable in both static and dynamic scenarios. The ultimate goal will be to create the first family of perfectly parallel, lowest multiplicative constant, linear complexity algorithms, for products, inversions, and MRHS problems, resulting in radical accelerations in CEM simulations.

By accomplishing this, TESSERHACK will drastically reduce computational time and resource requirements across various fields impacted by CEM. The project's outcomes promise a dramatic impact on time-sensitive applications, enabling instantaneous assessments and increased precision. This will lead to orders-of-magnitude speed improvements, revolutionizing electromagnetic predictions, imaging, and design in CEM and in all related disciplines.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

HORIZON-ERC - HORIZON ERC Grants

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
