Objective
When stars die as supernovae (SNe), the ejected material enables the next generation of stars, planets and perhaps even life to be formed. At the same time, SNe regulate further star formation in their host galaxies. This fascinating interplay between SNe and their surroundings affects our understanding of the evolution of the universe itself, as it impacts the ‘standard candle’ nature of Type Ia SNe used in cosmology. The Sparkles project aims to spearhead improvements in cosmological measurements. Recent results suggest that dark energy, believed to be causing the accelerating expansion of the universe, may not be in a simple, constant form, while inconsistent measurements of the Hubble constant also indicate a possible failure of the ‘concordance’ model for cosmology. If confirmed, these results imply dramatic change in our understanding of the universe. New, improved cosmology experiments are imminent, but systematic effects must be controlled for them to succeed. This project will address the limiting factor in SN cosmology, namely systematic effects related to the host galaxy environment of SNe. I will bring novel approaches and apply them to new data from the Euclid mission and several new ground-based observatories, which will combine to form a spectacular dataset on a massive scale. My team will find SNe, characterize them and pin-point their location relative to structures within their galaxies. For the first time, the location of SNe relative to spiral arms will be tested as a tool for cosmology. In parallel, we will produce a comprehensive dataset of 90000 SNe (of all types) and their environments for use by the community, potentially including previously unknown SN classes. Sparkles will generate a new understanding of SN environments and ultimately advance knowledge on the accelerating expansion of the universe. With new surveys starting, now is the time to make this major leap in a dynamic field.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
