Precision 3D Modeling of Type Ia Supernovae for Observational Confrontation

Objective

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are critical to both astrophysics and cosmology: they are key contributors to galactic chemical enrichment and serve as standardizable candles for measuring cosmic expansion. Despite their importance, the physical nature of these explosions—their progenitor systems and ignition mechanisms—remains unresolved after decades of study. This challenge persists because current models cannot robustly reproduce key observational signatures and are limited by simplifying assumptions and computational constraints.

This project, SNAP3D, will deliver the first large-scale, high-fidelity 3D simulations of leading SNe Ia explosion models. Leveraging a novel, fast-converging numerical scheme and dedicated high-performance computing resources, we will systematically explore whether realistic versions of the double-detonation and white dwarf collision scenarios can reproduce robust, model-independent observables. These include the gamma-ray escape time vs. nickel mass relation, bolometric width–luminosity trends, and nebular line profiles.

SNAP3D will either identify a viable progenitor model or rule out existing scenarios, resolving a major open question in stellar astrophysics. All simulation outputs and tools will be made publicly available, laying the foundation for future studies across supernova types and establishing a new standard for model–data comparison in the field.
