Near-Zero-Error Information Theory

Objective

"Information Theory grew out of Shannon's seminal work as a monumental framework developed around the problem of coding and transmission of information under the requirement that ""bad"" events have vanishing probability, when the allowed system complexity grows. Shannon himself observed that requiring the probability to be precisely zero dramatically changes the problem, shifting the framework from a probabilistic to a purely combinatorial one: Zero-Error Information Theory.
While progresses have been distinctly made in these two sub-fields in the last 75 years, the border land between them has remained largely unexplored. At the frontier between these two domains, fascinating phenomena emerge which combine the probabilistic and combinatorial nature of information in unexpected ways. However, standard methods of either fields generally fail to give relevant answers, and new ideas are needed to grasp the fundamental laws which govern information in this near-zero-error regime.

This project aims at exploring in a systematic way problems which lie at the border between ordinary and zero-error information theory. This goal will be pursued both in the classical and in the quantum settings, the two being intimately connected in the transition from non-zero to zero probability values. Preliminary studies conducted in this direction have shown that this is an extremely challenging but highly rewarding research line, since it brings to light unexpected connections between apparently unrelated methods developed in combinatorics, probability, and quantum information processing. The main goal of this project is to focus on some of the most interesting and challenging problems of coding and transmission to develop new solutions based on a global view, replacing previously isolated and specialized tools with more general and powerful methods which will shed new light on the mathematical essence of information."

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

UNIVERSITA DEGLI STUDI DI BRESCIA
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
