Objective
Early-medieval Iberian Christian culture was shaped and experienced by individuals almost none of whose names survive. Anonymous Agency aims to identify such individuals by their actions, not their names: by the unique fingerprints of individual style preserved in what they created, composed, wrote, revised, and built. My team seeks to trace the agency of these anonymous individuals through the networks in which they operated, and the social and geographical paths by which ideas travelled. To uncover their individual contributions, my transdisciplinary team will use AI-assisted corpus analysis, social network analysis (including GIS mapping and GEPHI), palaeography, computer-assisted melodic analysis, and comparative textual and architectural analysis to examine primarily anonymous sources. These include charters, church council records, liturgical manuscripts including music, churches and archaeological remains, theological and literary works, chronicles, and legal texts. My objectives are: (1) to identify traces of anonymous individuals’ activities in knowledge production, dissemination and revision in early medieval Iberia; and (2) to discern the ritual agency of anonymous actors who did not leave any products behind them from which we can deduce aspects of their identities, but whose existence can be deduced from the evidence base. Their activities fed back into Christian knowledge production, dissemination and revision. Through an innovative, transdisciplinary methodology this project will repopulate the early-medieval Iberian historical landscape with unnamed individuals whose actions contributed in diverse ways to Christian ritual practice and the transfer of cultural knowledge.
