Objective
Volcano seismology is one of the main methods used to study deep magmatic structure and processes. Despite being developed for decades and applied in many regions in the World, it remains to a great extent empirical and we still do not have reliable methods to quantitatively relate the seismo-volcanic observations to physical parameters controlling the evolution of magmatic systems at depth. Therefore, fundamental questions, such as how much magma and melt are stored beneath volcanoes and how fast the new magma is supplied, remain largely unanswered.
To address these questions, I plan to reformulate the analysis and interpretation of seismo-volcanic data with a hypothesis-driven and process-oriented approach. Namely, I propose to design “Physics-based Seismo-Volcanic Digital Twins” (PSVDT) of volcano-magmatic systems that will provide a virtual representation of the realistic media heterogeneity and the related complex wavefields. They will include: (1) scenarios of the evolution of the magmatic systems incorporating the volcanological and petrological knowledge, (2) new generation of numerical models of magma genesis, transport, and transformation, (3) high-resolution seismic structures, and (4) state-of-the art simulations of complex seismic wavefields. These twins will be used to run numerical experiments in order to create a new physically coherent test-bed for existing methods and their ability to retrieve the magma volume and fluxes and to design new methods directly linking the signal complexity with the magma and melt related media heterogeneity.
Application of the PSVDT based methods to observations at real volcanoes will result in the first physically consistent estimates of volumes and fluxes of magma stored at depth and in a new and more precise approach for quantitative evaluation of their eruptive potential. In this way, the DeepMagmaWaves project will contribute to developing the next generation of physics-based volcano monitoring methods.
