EMpowering Understanding in the European Union: Evaluating the Acceptability and the Action-Enabling Potential of Easy Language in Poland and Lithuania

Objective

Clear and accessible public communication is essential for inclusion, civic participation, and autonomous decision-making. However, there are society members who cannot understand the information written in standard language. These people could benefit from easy language, i.e. texts (re)written to be easier to process and comprehend. While Easy Language (EL) as a method for creating more accessible texts has been studied extensively recently, most evaluations focus only on readability, leaving a critical gap: are EL texts acceptable by their end-users and do they actually enable them to act? The project addresses that gap by introducing the concept of action-enabling communication and assessing whether EL texts support real-life functionality; such as completing administrative tasks, making informed choices, or navigating social services.
Focusing on two under-researched EU contexts – Poland and Lithuania – the study examines whether EL texts are not only comprehensible and socially acceptable, but also usable by migrants, L2 speakers, and members of the general public. Through a mixed-methods approach combining surveys, experiments, task-based testing, and interviews, the project will evaluate how users engage with EL materials in healthcare, administration, civic participation, and culture.
Beyond its scientific contribution, the fellowship provides advanced training in psycholinguistic methods, experimental design, and quantitative analysis, complementing the researcher’s background in qualitative and participatory approaches. It also offers hands-on experience in teaching, data management, and multilingual collaboration, while strengthening integration into European research networks on accessibility and inclusion. This combination will consolidate the fellow’s profile as an independent scholar in user-centred accessibility, positioning them to lead future European projects and shape evidence-based standards for effective and empowering public communication.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
