Objective
Although Egyptian archaeology is much in the public eye, the study of ancient Egyptian towns has lagged far behind other aspects of
the subject and remains confined to the research on the physical layout of towns. The BETWEEN project will take an entirely new
approach to this subject by exploring the concept of liminality – a temporal and transformative state of in-betweenness,
anti-structure, and ambiguity – within towns. Physically, border areas such as city gates, landing places and harbours, entrances to
buildings and cemeteries are fundamental to understanding aspects of liminality of pharaonic towns. Up to now, liminality in ancient
Egypt has been studied almost exclusively in relation to religion, cosmology, and sacral contexts. BETWEEN will expand this to
include the everyday lived experience of people in urban settings and the converging spaces.
We propose that the material remains of activities in liminal spaces – ritual, social, or professional – can be found in the archaeological
record. BETWEEN will study relevant settlement sites throughout Egypt and use two ancient Egyptian towns as in-depth case
studies: Tell el-Dab’a, the capital of the Hyksos rulers in Lower Egypt, and Kom Ombo, an Old Kingdom provincial centre in Upper
Egypt. The extremely high quality archaeological data available from these sites is wholly accessible to the BETWEEN project and
will provide the chance to develop research hypotheses and test them in the field.
Going beyond state-of-the-art methods in settlement archaeology in Egypt, BETWEEN will undertake a holistic interdisciplinary
study of liminality in ancient Egyptian towns. This approach will open the door for a profound understanding of urban liminal spaces
in ancient Egypt and the social processes at work within them. BETWEEN has a ground-breaking potential beyond Egyptology, for
the understanding of one of the most fundamental questions in human societies: that of belonging.
