Objective
Paleomagnetism – the study of past magnetic fields on Earth and beyond – has shaped our understanding of Earth's dynamic history and remains one of the most powerful tools to study the structure and evolution of the early solar system, unravel the processes that formed rocky planets, asteroids, and moons, and probe the role magnetic fields played in creating conditions necessary for life in the universe.
Paleomagnetism is founded on the principle that stable magnetisation in rocks is carried by small (<100 nm), uniformly magnetised ‘single-domain’ grains. However, recent major advances show that most natural remanence carriers are, in fact, grains of intermediate size (100s–1000s of nm) that adopt complex, non-uniform remanent states known as ‘vortex’ states. Vortex states defy the theories universally relied upon to extract paleomagnetic information from rocks. This limits the diversity of samples suitable for paleomagnetic study, creating major gaps in our terrestrial and extraterrestrial records and causing large uncertainty in determining past magnetic field strength. Overcoming this challenge is the primary aim of MINGLE.
Thanks to recent breakthroughs – developed and applied to natural materials for the first time by the MINGLE team – we can now explore vortex states in unprecedented detail. MINGLE will usher in a new era of high-resolution in situ 3D magnetic vector tomography for terrestrial and extraterrestrial materials, unlocking regions of sample size/paleomagnetic parameter space that are currently inaccessible. The resulting insights will guide development of new micromagnetic models that bypass current computational barriers. With this knowledge, MINGLE will drive progress in cutting-edge paleomagnetic research: reconstructing magnetic field distributions across the early solar system, modelling interactions between magnetic minerals and prebiotic chiral molecules (a key step in the origin of life), and extracting reliable data from the early Earth.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
