Objective
Research on modern Judaism usually acknowledges Jewish thought in Europe only before the Holocaust, primarily in Germany, while postwar Jewish intellectual life is assumed to have shifted to North America and Israel. This project reframes the picture by studying post-1945 France as the center of contemporary European Jewish thought.
After the Second World War, France became home to the largest Jewish community in Europe and the third largest worldwide. French-Jewish thought in this period emerged from the tension between Enlightenment ideals and the disillusionments of world wars, the Holocaust, colonialism and decolonization. REFEUJ will study it as a laboratory where the idea of Europe itself was re-examined and reinvented through epistemic encounters with non-European and marginalized alterities.
The project’s methodological innovation is to analyze French-Jewish thought as constituted by three transnational movements that brought republican French Judaism into contact with three crisis zones of the 20th century: German-Jewish refugees in France after the Holocaust, North African Jews arriving in the wake of decolonization, and Jewish intellectuals moving between France and Israel-Palestine. These movements will be examined comparatively across three transversal themes: collective memory, political visions, and cultures of knowledge.
By focusing on understudied authors, works and networks, the project’s interdisciplinary approach will redefine the relationship of European Jewish Studies to the wider humanities and social sciences. Its publications, conferences, events and media contributions will enrich scholarship and reshape public debate on urgent contemporary questions of Europe, diasporic Jewish life and Israel-Palestine, as well as the broader challenges of cultural and religious diversity in European societies.
