Next generation sustainable, intelligent, occupant-centric indoor climate management system

Project description

Towards intelligent and energy-efficient indoor climate management

Buildings often struggle to balance healthy and comfortable indoor environments with energy efficiency, as current climate control systems rarely adapt effectively to occupants’ needs and behaviours. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the NEXT-ICM project will design an innovative climate control system for buildings that focuses on the enhancement of occupants’ health and comfort in buildings while saving energy. It will use IoT, digital twin and AI technologies to create intelligent predictive solutions for indoor ventilation and indoor environment management. Overall, the project supports healthier living environments while significantly reducing the energy consumption and environmental impact of buildings.

Objective

As concerns about climate change, health, and energy consumption grow, the way we manage the indoor climate in buildings has never been more critical. Traditional manual operation barely achieves optimal indoor health, comfort, and energy efficiency, while automated controls prioritize system performance over engagement and preferences of building users. This project combines the emerging technologies of the Internet of Things, digital twins, and artificial intelligence to address key research gaps and technical challenges in predictive modelling of hybrid ventilation, occupant-centric indoor climate management, and AI-powered building–occupant interaction. By integrating these innovations into a unified system, the project offers a sustainable, intelligent, occupant-centric solution for the next generation of indoor climate management (NEXT-ICM).
