Analog Ultrastable Organic Glasses for Reconfigurable Memory and Spike-based Computing

Objective

Modern memory technologies rely on rigid binary states and physically separate storage and processing units leading to high energy consumption and inefficiencies that are incompatible with emerging intelligent systems. GLASSPIKE proposes a materials-centred disruptive alternative that harnesses the intrinsic properties of small-molecule ultrastable glasses to build a soft, analogue, spike-modulated, non-volatile memory with adaptive, brain-like behaviour and achieves memristive-like operation through controlled polarization rather than resistance switching. These vapor-deposited organic materials, renowned for their exceptional kinetic and thermodynamic stability, can also exhibit very large spontaneous orientation polarization when molecular dipoles align during growth. Voltage- and interface-driven imprinting writes distinct polarization levels during brief, locally heated excursions to the liquid state and locks them on quenching enabling multistate, gradual, reversible updates; low-temperature, solvent-free patterning confines these transformations to defined micro- to nanoscale domains aligned to heaters, forming bistable glassy arrays for high-density, addressable integration. Rapid (de)polarization emits spike-like currents that self-verify each update and enable event-driven control allowing computation where the data live. The project systematically investigates how ultrastability, molecular anisotropy, interfacial engineering, spatially resolved front-mediated devitrification, and field-driven dipole reconfiguration create and preserve spatially encoded analogue states. Together, these advances will lay the foundation for an innovative concept of energy-efficient organic material that unites multi-bit memory and computation. GLASSPIKE is expected to exploit to an unprecedented extent the voltage-driven actuation in dipolar glasses to forge an entirely new paradigm in neuromorphic hardware.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
