A scalable and efficient fibre power source for bio-electronics application

Objective

Bio-integrated devices rely on power sources for their operation. Biocompatible, flexible, and self-sustained power sources are desirable, but still challenging. To cater to the power demands across diverse bio-application scenarios, an ideal power source should enable both miniaturization and scalable production. However, power sources that combine the required capabilities have not yet been produced. One approach is to use fibre power sources, which can bridge the gap between microdevices and industrial energy systems through their inherent structural adaptability and synergy between energy integration and scalability. The FMEG-CW project aims to develop a self-sustaining fiber power source based on moisture electric generators (MEGs) for treating chronic wounds. Specifically, the project will achieve the following Objectives: O1) to develop a flexible, high-performance, and biocompatible fibre MEG (FMEG) and investigate the work mechanism of FMEGs by both simulation and experiments, O2) fabrication optimization for scalable and portable FMEGs, and O3) to demonstrate FMEGs for chronic wound healing in vivo as the bio-application of FMEGs. The successful completion of the Objectives will shape a new landscape of electrotherapy by introducing multifaceted FMEGs and build a feasible mass-production platform for scaling FMEGs.
