The Nature of Quantum Reality

Objective

Quantum technologies may soon be integrated into our lives and yet, 100 years on, there is still no consensus about what quantum physics implies about reality. This project uses the insights of both physicists and philosophers to inform a deeper understanding of the quantum world, as well as our place in it. A central premise is that consensus on the deep lessons of quantum physics has so far been blocked due to a fundamental disagreement about the role of the observer in physical theories. This has made philosophers of physics resistant to taking seriously the interpretations of quantum mechanics most influential among physicists. Although a prominent point of view going back to Einstein is that observers have no place in statements of fundamental physical theory, many physicists argue that one cannot appreciate the reality revealed by quantum physics without recognizing a special role for observers. This work’s first task will be to develop a rigorous articulation of a class of understandings of quantum reality that are particularly influential among quantum physicists today in which observers play a special role. These descend from the physicist John Wheeler’s idea that we inhabit a participatory universe, which later evolved into the idea of “it-from-bit.” These include QBism and the information-theoretic approaches of Brukner, Müller, and Zeilinger. A guiding hypothesis is that these frameworks are more defensible than has been recognized in the philosophical community. The project will provide the first comprehensive and interdisciplinary metaphysical analysis and assessment of these approaches, which will then be used to develop an interpretation of quantum reality that can be applied in metaphysics to advance work on several significant philosophical questions concerning the nature of physical reality, ourselves, and our status as free agents.

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

HORIZON-ERC - HORIZON ERC Grants

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
