Circuits of Emotion Recognition

Objective

EmotionalBrainS proposes a complete paradigm shift in how we view the social and emotional brains. The way we perceive, process, and react to others' emotional states (Emotion Recognition) is at the core of all animal interactions, playing a central role not only in our daily lives and well-being, but also in shaping societies. Determining the mechanisms underpinning emotion recognition will significantly advance our understanding of how individuals engage with others and the role of the socio-emotional brain in health and disease.
Leveraging on recently developed and validated innovative paradigms for mice that allow us to disentangle previously unexplored cell- and circuit-specific mechanisms of emotion recognition, EmotionalBrainS proposes to address these key questions:
1) What are the circuit mechanisms that enable multiple brains to engage in real-time social interactions when confronted with emotionally altered states in others?
2) How do individual and shared emotional experiences shape inter-brain circuits dynamics, and how do these changes influence subsequent responses to others’ emotions?
3) Are there circuit-specific inter-brain mechanisms that causally modulate physiological abilities and opposite alterations in emotion recognition?
Building on robust foundations and compelling preliminary data, we will elucidate evolutionarily conserved multi-brain mechanisms that govern socio-emotional behaviors. This is the right time to combine innovative translational socio-cognitive assessments in mice with cutting-edge genetics, single-cell and whole-brain imaging, and optogenetics manipulations to address these questions. This ambitious program has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of the emotional lives of animals at individual and group levels.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

HORIZON-ERC - HORIZON ERC Grants

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

FONDAZIONE ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI TECNOLOGIA
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
