Gender inequality in the Eastern Mediterranean: From early modern to modern, 1650-1900

Objective

The slow pace of the progress towards global gender equality has brought to spotlight the historical causes of the problem, and inspired much research while the relation observed today between gender regimes and development has come to link gender inequality with the debate on the Great Divergence. Yet much of this research so far pertains to Europe. The Global South, where inequality is higher, figures in the debates on feeble empirical grounds.
GINIE is motivated both by gender inequality as a political problem and the recent academic debates. It aims to (1) generate a map of gender regimes in the eastern Mediterranean in 1650-1900, and (2) examine (a) the determinants of these regimes and, (b) the gender regime’s impact on economic performance. Thereby, it aims to provide a solid empirical basis to compare the present map of inequality with the past and to fill a major gap in the literature on gender inequality and the rise of modern market society.
The main methodological novelty of the project is the creation of a gender gap index with four axes: physical wellbeing, economic power, human capital, and socio-political power, i.e. in terms analogous to contemporary indexes. Empirically, GINIE will unearth an unprecedented amount and combination of archival materials to build the largest database of its kind and bridge the history of several modern states in the southern Balkans, Anatolia, and the east Mediterranean seaboard. Its theoretical novelty lies in the juxtaposition of long-term structural factors (physical, institutional, cultural) with early modern and early industrial economic change from the perspective of (a) dependent/late growth and (b) general economic inequality, both of which have hitherto been overlooked in historical studies of gender.
The deliverables include workshops, one conference, two PhD dissertations, thirteen articles, one monograph, an edited volume of conference proceedings, and an open access database and a web portal.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party.
