Objective
Iconic buildings dominate today’s perception of the Roman Empire, yet the interdependencies between the empire, its architecture, its society, and its environment have never been systematically studied. ConstruEnS unlocks Roman buildings as rich and unique historical archives of past practices, decision making, and human-environment interactions. Developing innovative tools and models, the project aims at initiating a paradigm shift in the Humanities by establishing architecture as a central source for understanding material, social, and environmental history. The extant remains of monumental Roman buildings on the Rhine and Upper Danube offer ideal case studies: with the rivers as key vectors of transport and mobility, the newly founded Roman cities and their hinterlands grew rapidly from the early 1st to the 4th century CE. Construction in these cities introduced new techniques, materials, supply networks, and skills. Thanks to excellent preservation and documentation, ConstruEnS focuses on Xanten, Cologne, Mainz, Regensburg, and Carnuntum to develop a new understanding of construction’s role in shaping the Roman Empire.
Bringing together archaeology, architecture, archaeometry, geosciences, ancient history, and computer science, ConstruEnS takes an innovative interdisciplinary approach. Using architectural remains, archaeometric analyses, palaeoenvironmental data, and ancient texts, it studies Roman buildings, their materials, and techniques, reconstructs construction dynamics and logistics, determines the provenance of resources, assesses environmental conditions and ecological footprints, and models the energy needs and social composition of the workforce. Advanced software and digital tools analyse these data and present them in an open-access online database. This establishes a new framework and field-defining standards for further cross-period, cross-regional studies into imperialism, energy management, and sustainability through the lens of architecture.
