Objective
Anthropogenic climate change is not only an environmental issue but an assemblage of ecological, social, political, and economic processes that reconfigure human–nature interactions. The Arctic is at the frontline of this change, warming four times faster than the global average. Melting sea ice, altered ocean circulation, and expanding economic and military activities generate cascading global impacts, making the region an early warning system with planetary consequences.
RiverPulse translates these signals into theory-driven, empirically grounded insights on how climate change reconfigures nature-human relations. It examines how multispecies, affective, discursive, and material entanglements shape how climate change is experienced and governed through empirical research on three salmon rivers in Norway, Finland, and Greenland. RiverPulse advances three innovations: climate change as a crisis of relations; rivers as assemblages of multiple processes; and commoning governance as practices of resistance and responsibility. Focusing on the Reisa, Tornio, and Kapisillit Rivers, it shows how wild salmon embodies relational climate crises as a bioindicator, cultural anchor, and economic resource, turning salmon rivers into sites of struggle over redistribution and recognition of loss, responsibility, and authority. Through their relationality, Arctic salmon rivers preview planetary futures.
RiverPulse develops assemblage thinking into an empirically robust framework by integrating multispecies ethnography, discourse analysis, ecological monitoring, and citizen science. This captures how material, discursive, and affective aspects of climate change produce shifting socio-ecological configurations that generate contested meaning, disrupted practices, and pathways for change. RiverPulse advances a paradigm that is context-specific and relational, opening a horizon for interdisciplinary climate research that is locally grounded and globally relevant.
