SUstainable strategies and Practices to Prevent Outbreaks and Reduce Threats of hemipteran-borne diseases of grapevine (Vitis spp.)

Objective

Viticulture is an economically important agro-industry and one of the most pesticide-dependent, with insecticides representing over 20% of those used on fruit and vegetables. Insect vectors transmit plant bacteria and viruses, causing extensive indirect crop damage in addition to feeding injury. SUPPORTVitis focuses on three priority hemipteran-transmitted grapevine diseases currently regulated as quarantine pests (EPPO A1/A2 Lists): the native Flavescence dorée phytoplasma, the emerging Xylella fastidiosa (both in A2), and the new grapevine red blotch virus (in A1, not yet reported in the EPPO region). The project will develop multi-pest early detection and surveillance tools, combining multispectral proximal/remote sensing, AI, and advanced molecular diagnostics. It will model the epidemiological dynamics of the diseases under various global change scenarios to identify key environmental and biological drivers of spread. To promote sustainability, SUPPORTVitis will explore grapevine genetic resources to identify traits associated with resistance, to be used in both conventional breeding and genome editing. It will design novel, sustainable control strategies targeting both pathogens and vectors, including biological control, rationally designed agrochemicals, RNAi- and biotremology-based approaches. Beneficiaries of tailored cascading grants (FSTP) will validate in vineyards the most mature surveillance and control tools. The project will assess the environmental and socio-economic implications of the diseases and their control methods, aiming for a reduction in insecticide use and disease-related losses. It will implement a comprehensive dissemination and stakeholder engagement (growers, plant health services, policy makers) to inform and support EU adoption of innovative phytosanitaries measures. A multidisciplinary, multi-actor consortium of affected or threatened countries will protect an iconic and valuable crop from emerging and future phytosanitary threats.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Coordinator

CONSIGLIO NAZIONALE DELLE RICERCHE
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
