Objective
Condensed matter physics primarily focuses on understanding, optimizing and tuning of electronic phases of solids that exhibit functionally relevant properties such as superconductivity or magnetism. A promising platform for this pursuit is offered by two-dimensional materials and their moire structures, which feature strong interactions and flat bands that have already allowed for the observation of several novel electronic phases, including superconductivity and fractional Chern insulators. However, the tunability of interactions and control of the ensuing correlated phases remain modest compared to those of cold.
Here, we propose to address this challenge by investigating interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures of electrons and interlayer excitons in two dimensional materials, where tunable exciton-electron interactions constitute a novel control knob that could manipulate robust functional states or induce phases that have so far eluded experimental observation. We propose two complementary methods to generate interlayer excitons where an electron and a hole in different monolayers form tightly bound states. In addition to the standard paradigm composed of a coherent state of bosons and a degenerate Fermi liquid, we realize mixtures in which excitons form a fractional Chern insulator - a topologically ordered state that has hitherto remained elusive.
The functionalities we target in Bose-Fermi mixtures include exciton-mediated unconventional superconductivity and simulation of frustration-induced kinetic antiferromagnetism. To verify the emergence of the aforementioned phenomena, we will use a combination of resonant optical and transport spectroscopy, in addition to a quantum optical twisting microscope which we recently developed. Our principal goal is to make use of kinetic frustration, topological bands, or Feshbach resonances to explore if previously obtained limits for the maximal ratio of superconducting critical temperature to Fermi energy could be exceeded.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
