Bridging migration and family studies through the lens of transnational parenting

Objective

TransParent pioneers a paradigm shift in the study of child migration by reframing it as a family-embedded process. While existing research overwhelmingly focuses on separated refugee minors in host countries, the voices of their parents and siblings who remain behind, especially in contexts of forced migration, are strikingly absent from scholarship, policy, and care practices. This project bridges child migration studies and child and family research, integrating theories of parent-child separation with transnationalism to conceptualize separated minors as children embedded in dynamic family contexts.
Using a longitudinal, mixed-methods, multi-country design, TransParent investigates the lived experiences, wellbeing, and transnational parenting practices of staying-behind parents and siblings in four major countries of origin – Afghanistan, Syria, South Sudan, and Nigeria, alongside family reunification processes of minors returning to these contexts, and young separated minors in foster care families in Belgium.
Data will be generated through repeated individual and family interviews, culturally adapted questionnaires, and continuous documentation of parent-child interactions, and a large-scale survey capturing cultural views on migration, kinship, and parenting. A culturally embedded research team and strong local stakeholders networks ensure contextual sensitivity and feasibility, even in hard-to-reach and volatile settings.
By systematically integrating these silenced voices, TransParent will generate groundbreaking evidence, and theorise a new paradigm that dissolves disciplinary divides. The project delivers transformative impacts: advancing migration and family studies, enriching knowledge beyond migratory contexts, informing interventions, and providing critical evidence for migration and family reunification policies. In doing so, TransParent establishes an innovative, futureproof framework with enduring scholarly, societal, and policy relevance.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
