Objective
Earthquakes occur at an enormous human and economic cost. While a framework exists for understanding the physics of earthquakes, a lack of physical understanding of key stages in the earthquake cycle hinder our progress towards developing deterministic models of the earthquake process. PhysiQuake aims to build a fundamental understanding of the physics and chemistry of processes that occur during all stages of an earthquake. It will overcome key fundamental knowledge gaps across the earthquake cycle—nucleation, propagation, and arrest—to unblock our understanding of the full system. Unique laboratory experiments will build our understanding from the molecular scale upwards using the latest developments in surface science and tribology, applied for the first time to frictional studies. Key processes will be constrained and constitutive parameters determined over as yet unexplored experimental conditions. By gaining physical insight into each stage, we can extend findings beyond current experimental limits and bridge time and length scales through modelling. Improved input to models will allow output such as rupture dynamics and earthquake statistics to be compared with natural observations. Differences between models and nature will highlight knowledge gaps and help us constrain the properties of natural faults, and the environmental conditions that act upon them. This interdisciplinary project draws on new developments and world-leading expertise in surface science, electrochemistry, tribology, experimental rock mechanics, and numerical modelling. PhysiQuake will deliver a constrained physical understanding of the earthquake process and a step change that will advance seismic forecasting and hazard assessment.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
