Objective
Over the past two decades, research into liquid-solid impact has revealed the crucial and often beneficial, load-reducing role of the intermediate gas phase. Experiments, numerics, and theory to date almost exclusively focus on non-condensable gases like air. Replacing the latter by the vapor phase of the impacting liquid itself completely reverses this mitigating action: Recent experiments show that the pressure on the solid structure may increase by as much as one to two orders of magnitude. These findings may be of extreme consequence for structural integrity of overseas carriers of energy-transition-relevant fuels, like liquid natural gas (LNG) and --particularly urgent-- liquid hydrogen (LH2), which precisely are cryogenic liquids in equilibrium with their own vapor, or boiling liquids for short.
In spite of their relevance for these applications, the fundamental questions arising during liquid-solid impact under these boiling liquid conditions are largely uncharted territory and, therefore, either unknown or poorly understood, as phase change adds major complexity to the fluid dynamics of impact in the form of mass and heat transfer.
The objective of this project is to come to full fundamental understanding of the science of boiling liquid impact and simultaneously provide quantitative answers that are crucial to the cryogenic fuel industry. To achieve this, a multiscale endeavor is required, where we perform a number of key controlled experiments and numerical simulations on various length scales. A one-to-one comparison of experiment and theory will allow us to not only arrive at a deep understanding of the underlying physics, but also to create a numerical tool to help the industry predict the effect of phase change on impact loads experienced during transport of cryogenic fuels for the benefit of the energy transition.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
